Session: Understanding I: Vascular dysregulation

Prof Alain Moreau works at the Departments of Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine, and Stomatology at the Université de Montréal and as a researcher at the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Centre in Canada. His current research focuses on the unresolved mechanisms underlying ME/CFS, with particular emphasis on genetic predisposition and the biological processes involved. A key area of his work is epigenetics, which explores how environmental factors influence gene expression without altering the DNA sequence. His team has demonstrated that factors such as infections and environmental toxins can effectively “reprogram” biological mechanisms. In addition, Prof Moreau has identified several promising biomarkers that could improve diagnosis and open new therapeutic avenues. These include distinct molecular signatures of circulating microRNAs that enable clear differentiation from related conditions such as fibromyalgia, as well as the protein SMPDL3B, whose regulation is currently being investigated.
