Prof. Dr. Carmen Scheibenbogen opened this year’s International ME/CFS Conference. She spoke positively about the significant progress made in the ME/CFS research landscape over the last 12 months alone. Many of the new findings were set to be presented to a wider audience for the first time at this year’s Conference. Nevertheless, the care situation for many patients remains inadequate, as there are currently no effective treatment options available. The scientific community is called upon to change this as quickly as possible. Prof. Scheibenbogen also highlighted the role of the media in bringing the topic to the attention of the general public. Finally, she noted that the results of genetic studies from the UK rank among the most impressive of the past year—alongside the latest findings from Birgit Sawitzki’s research group, which focuses on identifying ME/CFS subgroups based on immune profiles, in addition to results from modern imaging studies.
